About Us

Established in 1992, Dart Stables has been a significant part of the Glenorchy community and New Zealand tourism industry for decades, and is known as a premier horse-trekking experience.

We now have more than 60 horses, hosting more than 11,000 visitors every year on our 280-acre property, which allows customers to ride uninterrupted from Glenorchy to the foot of Mt Alfred, and along and across the Rees River. Being able to ride without stopping to open a gate is unique for a horse-trekking business, and the ability to access an untouched landscape is a special visitor experience.

Our experienced and enthusiastic guides spend a lot of time with each horse, assessing their abilities and personality, so that we can provide a suitable match for each rider. Customers are constantly amazed at the condition of our horses and the beauty that surrounds us. Most say they have never experienced better.

In December 2016, Ngāi Tahu Tourism purchased Dart Stables from owner-operators Peter and Jenny Davies, who had run the business for over 20 years.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism’s focus is on connecting visitors to the environment and to our people through the experiences we offer. Glenorchy is the gateway to Te Waipounamu (the South Island of Aotearoa) and Mount Aspiring National Park, which are two important cultural areas for Ngāi Tahu.

Our goal is to connect our customers to our unique Aotearoa experiences, to ourselves, to Ngāi Tahu and to our beautiful environment. Through this we strive to provide an authentic and extraordinary experience that will stay with our visitors forever.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism is one of Aotearoa’s largest tourism operators, hosting one million visitors every year across its 11 businesses, including Shotover Jet, Guided Walks New Zealand, Dart River Jet, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Glacier Hot Pools, Hukafalls Jet, Agrodome, Rainbow Springs, Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters and Earth and Sky (joint venture).
