Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to wear / bring for all rides?

  • Comfortable full length trousers.
  • Riding boots or a sturdy shoe with a low heel. For safety reasons you won’t be permitted to ride in flat soled shoes with no heel but don't worry you can use a pair of our boots (just bring an extra pair of thick socks with you).
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Extra pair of thick socks
  • Jumper/fleece and a pair of gloves during the cooler months
  • Small camera which has a neck or belt strap. If you don’t have either make sure you bring a jacket/top/trousers with a zip up pocket which can accommodate your small camera.
  • .. and for the gentlemen, good fitting underwear (trust us on this one!)

What type of horses do you have?

We have a variety of breeds of varying heights - thoroughbreds and station cross breds. All are well schooled and cared for by a team of dedicated horsemen and women. You'll be matched to a horse most suitable to your riding experience and ability.

Will I be able to canter?

The Ride of the Rings and The Hobbits' Hack are walking paced rides and so there are no opportunities to canter. There are however opportunities to canter on The River Wild & The Trilogy Loop so long as the guide is satisfied with your ability and fitness to do so, and this doesn’t pose a danger to yourself and/or others. At all times a certain level of safety, and our guides judgement, has to be respected.

Do I need to wear a riding helmet?

Yes. Every client is provided with protective head gear which must be worn at all times during the ride for your own safety.

What will the weather be like?

Riding conditions in Glenorchy are generally good, invariably dry and sunny, however the weather can change rapidly so be prepared.

Will I get wet crossing the rivers on the ride?

Not intentionally. The guides will always test the river crossings and lead groups across the rivers. If in doubt an alternative route will be taken.

Can I take a camera on the ride?

Small cameras are welcome on all rides as there is a photo stop. However cameras should be securely fastened, either with a belt strap or in a zipped pocket. Cameras are carried at the riders own risk. We do not take any responsibility for any loss or damage. Large/bulky cameras are not recommended.

What age is a child?

Child ages are deemed 15 years and under.

What is your rider weight limit?

For the health and wellbeing of our horses and client safety we have a strict rider weight limit of 95kg/210lbs/15st. Please note this and provide accurate weights when booking. We reserve the right to weigh all customers on the day of the ride and if they exceed the rider weight limit, they will not be permitted to ride and a full charge will apply and no refunds will be provided.

What age must a child be to join a ride?

Confident 5 year olds are welcome to join The Hobbits’ Hack, but for all other rides children must be at least a confident 7 year old. For safety reasons we do not allow children to sit with their parents on a horse – it is 1 person per horse.

Do you have a safety box for our valuables?

No, so please leave all valuables and important documents in your hotel’s safety box or similar. We do not take responsibility for any valuables or important documents left at our property.

Can I take a bag or backpack on the ride?

For safety reasons backpacks or bags are not permitted to be carried by clients whilst on horseback.
